Rolls-Royce plans to invest in a new high-tech aero engine facility in Prince George County, Va. The company had previously announced that it was considering possible locations in Asia and the U.S. Initially, Rolls-Royce will invest $100 million to establish an assembly and test facility for its civil aerospace operations; however this investment is anticipated to build to $500 million and 500 new jobs as production volume increases. The facility is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2009.
AUTOMOTIVE
Sejong Georgia LLC, which supplies mufflers to Kia, recently announced that it will invest $27.8 million in a new manufacturing facility in LaGrange, Ga. , that will create 250 jobs. Sejong plans to retrofit the 108,000 square foot building on the site and will begin production in October 2009. The company is a longtime Kia supplier and this will be its second U.S. plant.
FOOD PROCESSING
A bakery subsidiary of Flowers Foods Inc. , a leading producer and marketer of packaged bakery foods in the U.S., recently announced it will invest $52 million in a new facility in Bardstown, Ky. The state preliminarily approved Flowers Foods for tax benefits up to $2 million under the Kentucky Industrial Development Act.
LIFE SCIENCES
Fort Dodge Animal Health recently announced that it will build a $40 million research and development facility in the Kansas Bioscience Park in Olathe, Kan. The company plans to employ more than 200 people when the 150,000 square foot facility opens.
MEDICAL EQUIPMENT
CSpine Inc. , an orthopedics development and consulting group, recently announced it will locate its new research and development and prototype manufacturing operation in Plymouth, Ind. , creating up to 49 new jobs by 2012. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered CSpine up to $300,000 in performance-based tax credits and up to $25,000 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans.
METAL FABRICATION
Carolina Fabrication recently announced that it will locate its headquarters and new manufacturing facility in Abbeville County, S.C. The company has purchased and will occupy the former Great Dane (Strick) Plant in the Lakeland’s Industrial Park. The firm will invest more than $5 million and intends to hire 120 people in its first year of operation.
PHARMACEUTICAL
Covance Inc. , one of the world’s largest drug development services companies, will move its operations from Fairfax County to Prince William County, Va. ,, where it will locate its new pharmaceutical research and development laboratory. The company, which will transform the former Eli Lilly site from 300,000 square feet to 410,000 square feet, will invest approximately $175 million, retain 450 existing jobs and create 100 new jobs.
PLASTICS
Berry Plastics recently announced its plans to consolidate its global corporate headquarters in Evansville, Ind. , creating 250 new jobs. The manufacturer and marketer of plastic packaging products will begin to invest more than $20 million to build and equip a new headquarters facility. The Indiana Economic Development Corp. offered Berry Plastics up to $4.7 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $200,000 in training grants based on the company’s job creation plans.
