Fluor Corp. recently announced that it was awarded a contract to provide front-end engineering and design (FEED) and engineering, procurement and construction-management (EPCM) services for a polysilicon plant for LDK Solar Co., Ltd. (NYSE: LDK) in Xinyu City, People’s Republic of China.
The total contract is in excess of $1 billion, with FEED work booked in third quarter 2007 and EPCM to be booked in 2008 upon full release.
“With this new facility, LDK Solar will be able to meet the world’s growing demand for polysilicon. Fluor’s extensive knowledge of the polysilicon market as well as their track record of successfully designing and constructing world class facilities in China made it the ideal contractor for this project,” said Xiaofeng Peng, chairman and chief executive officer of LDK Solar.

Site preparation has begun for the polysilicon production plant that will be located adjacent to LDK Solar's existing solar wafer manufacturing facilities in Xinyu City. LDK Solar has announced plans to complete construction and reach production capacity of up to 6,000 metric tons of polysilicon by the end of 2008 and 15,000 metric tons by the end of 2009.
