The complex is built on 30 acres, with an additional 70 acres for future expansion, on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.
The project was originally announced in October 2003. To date, total investment in Scripps Florida from the state and from Palm Beach County has been nearly $500 million, which is going toward construction of the new campus, recruitment of top scientists from around the world, as well as start-up costs, salaries, benefits and equipment.
The economic impact of Scripps Florida has already been significant. To date, Scripps Florida has been awarded more than $50 million in outside grants and filed more than 79 patent applications. According to the state of Florida, during the next 15 years, Scripps Florida is projected to create 6,500 jobs and generate about $1.6 billion in additional income, while boosting the state’s gross domestic product by $3.2 billion.
The goal of Palm Beach County is to create a biotech cluster. To that end, Munich, Germany-based Max Planck Society will open a 100,000-square-foot research facility next to Scripps. The county is providing $87 million and the state offered $94 million in incentives.
Eventually, Max Planck could employ more than 130 workers at the site.
