“Dow is extremely disappointed with the decision by the Kuwait government and is in the process of evaluating its options,” the Midland, Mich.-based company said in a statement.
Dow announced last year that it would site the global headquarters for the joint venture, which would have been called K-Dow, in Southeast Michigan, with the intent of creating 800 jobs. The joint venture was to have made plastics for a variety of materials, such as milk jugs, packaging materials, pipes and automotive parts.
State economic development officials were working with executives from K-Dow on a series of incentives for siting the project in Michigan.
“Michigan has worked very hard to land this joint venture, and we certainly share Dow's disappointment,” Bridget Beckman, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Economic Development Corp., told the Detroit Free Press.
