National Golden Tissue plans to employ about 110 workers by the end of the year. Currently, 25 workers are assisting with startup operations and specialty-manufacturing machinery installation. The machinery converts paper into smaller sheets with an element that will fold, count, and package for distribution.
The company is producing and selling paper products, including hand towels, bathroom tissue and industrial wipes to consumers, as well as to restaurants, hotels and offices.
It expects to progress toward full production during the next four years and will manufacture more advanced products, such as diapers and cleaning supplies. This will allow National Golden Tissue to employ between 400 and 500 workers.
Sam Shahrooz, CEO of National Golden Tissue, said the company was considering other sites in Maryland, as well as in Pennsylvania and West Virginia but chose Hagerstown for several reasons.
“During the site selection process, we utilized both the city and county economic development offices,” he said. “We chose Hagerstown because of the available building, stable work force and the friendliness of the people.”
Deborah A. Everhart, director of economic development for the city of Hagerstown said this is an exciting opportunity for Hagerstown.
“We look forward to their growth,” she said.
National Golden Tissue has invested $1.5 million and plans to invest up to $8 million by the end of the three-phase development project.
The company has received funding assistance from the Department of Business and Economic Development (DBED) and the city of Hagerstown’s Revolving Loan Fund.
“By providing companies like National Golden Tissue the financial tools they need to grow in Maryland, we are maximizing opportunities to bring well-paying jobs and prosperity to the working families of Western Maryland,” said David Edgerley, secretary of DBED. “This is just one example of how partnerships among state and local governments and the private sector can help create jobs and increase economic opportunities in Maryland.”
