Sam Dong Co. Ltd., has launched operations in its new facility in Rogersville, Tenn. The 80,000 square foot plant, which manufactures specialty wire, began production in March and currently employs 60 workers. Company executives said the facility will add up to 40 jobs as it becomes fully operational.
Today’s announcement marks the South Korea-based company’s first expansion outside that country. It was incorporated as a business in the state in July 2007 and its facility now sits on 10 acres in the Rogersville Industrial Park.
“We’re pleased to welcome Sam Dong to Tennessee and to the U.S.,” said Matt Kisber, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development. “Tennessee’s history of strength in the manufacturing sector makes Sam Dong a great fit for our local economy. We look forward to working with the company to expand its business.”
Ee Joo Lee, CEO of Sam Dong, cited the quality of the region’s work force and the cooperation among state and local officials as compelling reasons for the company to locate in Rogersville.
“We are pleased to call Tennessee home, and we anticipate that many prosperous years for our company and the state will grow out of this new relationship,” Lee said.
Sam Dong produces specialty magnet wire products used in the electrical transformer, motor and generator industries. Sam Dong has produced magnet wire in South Korea for 30 years and exports products globally. The company serves a broad North American customer base.
Company officials say the plant will initially employ between 25 and 50 individuals, with an employment of up to 100 when it is in full production.
Leon Molloy, president of the North American entity, said Rogersville is the ideal location for this new facility.
“From this location, the North American market and some export opportunities can be very effectively served,” Molloy said.
The company’s is based in Umsong, South Korea, and has factories in the South Korean cities of Kuk-Dong and Munkyung.
