Empire State Development, New York State’s economic development agency, recently announced that a $200,000 grant was committed to The Page Seed Company of Chenango County. The company, located in Greene, N.Y, specializes in seed packaging and turf product distribution.

ESD’s grant will be used to rebuild the business by investing in new systems, equipment, and product development initiatives. As a result, the company has pledged to retain the existing 23 jobs and add 60 new jobs as the business grows.

The Page Seed Company sells its registered product lines nationwide through retail chains and independently-owned garden centers. These products include Page’s Liberty Garden, Page’s Premium and Valley Green garden seed.

In August 2007, the company was predicted to eventually close due to existing business conditions, but was purchased by four individuals with Stuart Mill Capital based in Falls Church, Va. Now under new ownership, the company will continue to operate in Greene, N.Y., as they have been since 1896.

“It would not have been possible for us to acquire the assets of the company and expand the business without the assistance of Empire State Development,” explained Jeffrey Salinger, principal, Stuart Mill Capital “Not only did ESD respond quickly after they were contacted, we found their staff to be particularly knowledgeable and responsive. Through their efforts, we were able to complete a transaction in a timely manner and save a legacy business in Upstate New York.”
