Network Appliance, Inc. recently broke ground on an engineering lab facility located at the NetApp technology center in Research Triangle Park, N.C. NetApp will use the new facility to expand its engineering and development efforts in the region, which include furthering research initiatives to create more energy-conscious data centers.
The building’s infrastructure design reflects the innovative approach and commitment NetApp is taking to reduce data center power consumption. The estimated $61 million, 124,000 square foot engineering lab facility will be home to 2,160 racks of data-processing equipment and is expected to meet the EPA’s 2011 performance criteria for energy efficiency inside state-of-the-art data centers.
Upon completion of the new facility in August 2008, the environmental benefit over the company’s prior design approach, which exceeds current EPA standards for state-of-the-art data center design, will be equivalent to taking 7,000 cars off the road.
NetApp has been in the RTP region since 1999, and in 2004 bought three buildings in RTP from Cisco Systems, Inc., located at 7301 Kit Creek Road. In 2005, NetApp expanded operations with the opening of the NetApp RTP technology center. The space is roughly 520,000 square feet and capable of accommodating more than 2,000 employees.
The company currently employs 705 employees in the region and operates a 24x7 global service and support center, in addition to a state-of-the-art data center with a capacity of multiple petabytes.
