Delphi Corp. recently announced that it will open a new diesel engine management system (EMS) components plant located on a pre-existing industrial site in this community in Northeast Romania.
When all of the expansion plans for the new building, machinery and equipment are completed, Delphi said it could employ 1,000 workers. As a dedicated diesel site, the Iasi plant would produce high-precision, diesel fuel injection components, mainly pumps and injectors for common rail systems and will serve various customers around the world, the Troy, Mich.,-based company said.
The plant should be operational by the end of the year.
Delphi has well-developed expansion plans that call for several additional phases of new investment to launch products specified in already awarded new business contracts. Each of these future multimillion-dollar phases of investment are for new building, machinery and equipment and will support attainment of long-range planned capacity in Iasi.
Subject to Delphi's board of directors supporting future phases of investment, Delphi's total presence in Iasi, could reach more than 1,000 workers and could accumulate to exceed 100 million euro investment.
“We have recently won a large number of new programs and new customers, especially for diesel engine management systems that are Euro V compatible and we need to support our customers who are rapidly expanding in Central and Eastern Europe,” said Jose Avila, general manager for Delphi Diesel Systems. “We require additional plant capacity to support our continued growth.”
Recruitment to fill jobs at the initial facility has already started. Michel Stanciu, director of manufacturing strategy and engineering for Delphi Diesel Systems, said employees at the plant will receive work force training.
“Iasi has a deep pool of well-qualified employees from which we will select,” he said. “To augment those talents, each new employee will go through an extensive training program.”
Stanciu said he expects mutual benefits to be realized by the company and Romania through the localization of the plant.
“We look forward to a continued strong partnership with government officials, economic develop agencies and local educational institutions to finalize our long-range investment and capacity expansion plans,” he pointed out.
Delphi operates 13 sites dedicated to the diesel engine management system and has a presence in numerous countries, including Brazil, Korea, India, Turkey, Mexico, France, Spain and the UK.
