Abraxis BioScience Inc., an integrated, global biopharmaceutical company, recently announced the official opening of its manufacturing complex in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, which will support the growing manufacturing demands of Abraxis Pharmaceutical Products (APP), its hospital-based pharmaceutical division, and Abraxis Oncology, its proprietary division.
This 56-acre site consists of a 172,000 square foot validated manufacturing plant with capabilities of producing EU- and U.S.-compliant injectable pharmaceuticals, as well as protein-based biologics and metered dosed inhalers.
Approval by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for transfer of one product to this new facility have been received and additional transfers are expected throughout the year. Abraxis expects to begin distribution of product manufactured from this site sometime this year.
The facility, which now employs 200 of workers, is expected to employ about 400 to 500 workers when fully-operational.

The investment in this new facility will allow Abraxis to strategically maximize production at each of its manufacturing facilities and support the evolving needs of the company and its divisions.
