Bio-Rad Laboratories Inc., a multinational manufacturer and distributor of life sciences research and clinical diagnostics products, opened its a manufacturing plant Singapore, its first in the Asia-Pacific region.

Occupying about 20,000 square feet of industrial space at Kaki Bukit View, the new facility will manufacture a variety of life sciences instruments used in medical and biological research labs worldwide.

Bio-Rad's life sciences products are based on technologies used to identify, separate, purify and analyze biological materials such as protein and DNA. Some of these technologies include electrophoresis, imaging, immunoassay, chromatography, microbiology, bioinformatics, transfection, amplification, real-time PCR, microarray analysis, and DNA hybridization.

“Bio-Rad has had a marketing presence in Asia for more than 30 years and just recently, we selected Singapore as our Asia-Pacific headquarters,” said Scott Jenest, manufacturing operations manager for the Life Science Group at Bio-Rad Laboratories. “With many exciting changes that are taking place in Asia, we felt that Bio-Rad needed a manufacturing facility that was in proximity to our customers in the Asia-Pacific region.”

Singapore was selected based on its stable government, sound infrastructure, strategic location, well-educated work force and strong intellectual property laws, according to the company.

“The location offers greater access to a strong supply chain in the region, enabling Bio-Rad to support its production facilities on a global basis,” Jenest said. “But in addition to those reasons, we are pleased to play a role in Singapore's aspiration to become a key contributor for medical development and research efforts worldwide.”

In addition to its new manufacturing facility, Bio-Rad's Asia-Pacific region headquarters, which opened in December 2005, is located in Singapore.
