EADS North America recently opened its newest U.S. facility, which specializes in integrated shelter solutions for military, homeland security and disaster recovery applications.
The 8,500 square foot installation at Russellville, Ark., is the headquarters for EADS North America Integrated Shelter Systems, which leads the company’s activities in deployable integrated shelter systems for medical care, troop protection, command posts and other mission applications.
“The ability to supply quality medical care and protection on the front lines is more vital than ever – whether these front lines are in a theater of combat, at a disaster scene, or in response to a national emergency,” said David Oliver, President and CEO of EADS North America Defense. “We are pleased to partner with Arkansas in locating our integrated shelter system business activity at Russellville.”
EADS North America Integrated Shelter Systems’ products include the TransHospital mobile hospital unit, which currently is being evaluated by the U.S. Army; the Tentainer pallet-deployed medical care unit; and the TransProtec personnel transport system, designed to protect soldiers from explosives and mines including improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
Engineering work is currently being performed at the Russellville facility on prototype modules, which are being evaluated by the U.S. Army for its Future Medical Shelter System (FMSS) requirement. This TransHospital configuration consists of an operating room and support ward module – both of which are housed in transportable shelters.
TransHospital is designed for autonomous operation after a rapid deployment and set-up. With its modular design, TransHospital can be enlarged to the desired size and configuration by adding purpose-equipped shelter units.
The TransHospital system has demonstrated its capabilities in support of military deployments, including the German Army’s use in NATO coalition operations at Kosovo in Serbia and Kabul, Afghanistan. The Kosovo facility utilized TransHospital modular shelters to create a medical center with 260 beds, while the Kabul facility operates in a combat support hospital role.
TransHospital also has shown its value in U.S. and foreign disaster relief operations. A two-shelter TransHospital rescue station took part in U.S. Gulf Coast recovery operations after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, serving at Long Beach, Mississippi. During a month-long loan to the non-profit International Medical Alliance, more than 4,500 patient visits were processed through this TransHospital rescue station.
Another TransHospital rescue station was dispatched to Indonesia in early 2006, where it continues to serve one of the areas hard hit by the 2005 Indian Ocean tsunami.
EADS North America is the North American operations of EADS, the second largest aerospace and defense company in the world. The company has 12 operating companies located in 30 cities and 17 states.
