Beckman Coulter, Inc. recently announced that it will move its Palo Alto, Calif., operations to the Central Indiana area by the end of 2008, a move that will create approximately 212 new life science-related jobs. The action is designed to help the company reduce costs and improve its ability to recruit and retain skilled employees.
Beckman Coulter, Inc., a manufacturer of biomedical testing instrument systems, is based in Fullerton, Calif., with 2005 annual sales of $ 2.44 billion.
The majority of the activities in Palo Alto are associated with development and manufacturing of centrifuges, a key product line in the company’s Discovery and Automation product area. The greater Indianapolis area is currently home to other Beckman Coulter Discovery and Automation products. The company already employs approximately 130 workers in Indiana.
“Closing our facility in Palo Alto was a difficult decision because the people there have always done excellent work and we have a long history in the area,” said Pam Miller, senior vice president of Supply Chain Management for Beckman Coulter. “By relocating our operations to the Indianapolis area, we can work aggressively to manage our costs and maintain our leadership position in centrifugation, an important asset of the company. Also, we’re able to take a longer-term view of work force planning.”
The state of Indiana, through the Indiana Economic Development Corp., offered an incentive package that included up to $670,000 in training grants and approximately $2.7 million in tax credits based on commitments for job creation and capital investment.
