Lear Corp. will create an additional 40 jobs and invest an additional $2.9 million as the result of continued expansion in Mendon, Mich. In May 2005, the company announced that the original project would create 51 new jobs and $5.3 million in private investment.
The Michigan Economic Development Corp. recently offered the company a second Community Development Block Grant totaling $810,000 to support additional expansion. This brings the total number of jobs created by the company to 91 and the total private investment to $8.3 million.
The funding is being made available by the MEDC with funds provided by the federal Community Development Block Grant program. The award will be used to construct a new well and make other improvements to the water supply needed for Lear to accommodate the manufacture of a new product line. The city will contribute a total of $337,000 to the project.
The Michigan EDC administers the state’s Community Development Block Grant funds received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These funds are used to provide grants and loans to eligible counties, cities, villages and townships — typically those with populations less than 50,000 — for economic development, community development and housing projects. Larger communities receive block grant funds directly from the federal government.
