Distribution America, the country’s largest cooperative for independent hardware and paint supply distributor networks, has relocated its headquarters from Des Plaines, Ill., to Charlotte, N.C. The group now operates in 6,000 square feet of office space on Carmel Commons Boulevard in south Charlotte and employs 17 in headquarters and support positions.

Distribution America’s 12 member/owner distribution companies represent approximately $2 billion in combined buying power. The cooperative is used for group purchasing and for achieving economies of scale in advertising, back office support systems and other services.

CEO Dave Christmas cites Charlotte’s lower cost platform, business infrastructure and proximity to suppliers such as Irwin Tool/Newell Rubbermaid and Valspar as reasons for moving headquarters here.

Jim Thorp of Keystone Partners represented Distribution America in lease negotiations, and CB Richard Ellis represented the landlord.
