The state of Ohio recently awarded Lawrence County with a $430,600 grant to assist Engines, Inc. in developing transportation infrastructure related to an expansion project. The funds will be awarded through the Ohio Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Economic Development Program, which is administered by the Ohio Department of Development. The $4.4 million project will create 50 jobs.

"These funds will enable Engines, Inc. and Lawrence County to create good jobs in this Appalachian community," said Johnson, who also serves as state development director. "Programs like the CDBG Economic Development Program are assisting Ohio in strengthening its economy and invigorating our local communities."

Engines, Inc., located in the South Point Industrial Park, manufactures railroad car components and customized machinery for the steel industry. Lawrence County will use the funds to help extend a rail spur by 2,600 linear feet. The company will purchase four acres of property, a 42,000 square-foot building and machinery and equipment.

The CDBG Economic Development Program provides funding for economic development projects that create and/or retain permanent, private-sector job opportunities. The grants enable local governments to provide public improvements directly related to business development and financial assistance to private entities for economic development projects. Jobs created through this program must benefit primarily low- and moderate-income Ohioans.
