Sealy, the world’s largest bedding manufacturer, will locate its first U.S. latex manufacturing operation near Wilkes-Barre, Pa., creating at least 107 new jobs over the next three years.
Sealy will manufacture latex components including foam-encased innersprings at a 210,000-square-foot facility in Mountaintop. Currently, all of the company’s latex manufacturing is done in Italy and France.
“The specialty bedding market is an important part of our overall growth strategy,” said David McIlquham, Sealy’s chairman and chief executive officer. “The decision to break ground and build the Mountaintop plant represents one of Sealy’s most significant initiatives in 2006.”
The Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Business and Industry worked with Sealy and the Governor’s Action Team to secure a $307,000 investment package from the Department of Community and Economic Development for the expansion project. The Governor’s Action Team, under DCED, serves as a single point of contact for businesses that are interested in locating or expanding in Pennsylvania.
Sealy is the largest bedding manufacturer in the world with sales of nearly $1.5 billion in 2005. The company manufactures and markets a broad range of mattresses and foundations under the Sealy, Sealy Posturepedic, Stearns & Foster, and Bassett brands. Domestically, Sealy has 20 plants and more than 7,000 retail outlets.
