Medical manufacturer MDS Sciex has announced plans to open its first overseas manufacturing plant here, to complement its Ontario facility.
The Singapore plant will initially manufacture a new product from MDS, a cellular analysis product called CellKey.
“[CellKey] analyses live cells in the process of developing new medicines for treatment of disease,” said Andy Boorn, president of MDS. “It actually tries to measure the action of the medicine in the biological situation which it will actually experience when it is in a person's body. And this is the first technology of its type.”
A key reason behind the company’s decision to base its new facility in Singapore, Boorn said, is the access it provides to the country’s highly educated and skilled work force.
The Singapore facility is set to eventually produce all of MDS’ high volume products. It will be more than 30,000 square feet and will employ more than 100 workers when fully operational by end 2008.
Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research said the expansion is a strong vote of confidence for Singapore’s fast growing medical technology industry.
