Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm today announced a $400,500 grant to Holland Charter Township to make public infrastructure improvements needed for JB Laboratories Inc. to expand its facility. The grant is being made available by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. with funds provided by the federal Community Development Block Grant program. The project is expected to involve $2.7 million in private investment and add 25 new jobs.

“JB Labs has been a partner in Holland’s economic success for years,” Granholm said. “The company’s expansion in Michigan will strengthen our leadership in the life sciences industry and create good jobs for the 21st century.”

Founded in 1978, JB Laboratories manufactures vitamins, pharmaceuticals and nutritional supplements. The company is 100-percent employee-owned and operates a state-of-the-art production facility in the North HEDCOR Industrial park. JB Laboratories currently employs about 335 people.

Holland Charter Township will use the grant to make road improvements, relocate a water main and extend a wastewater line to support the construction of a new 50,000 square foot warehouse.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation administers the state’s Community Development Block Grant funds received from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These funds are used to provide grants and loans to eligible counties, cities, villages and townships—typically those with populations less than 50,000—for economic development, community development and housing projects. Larger communities receive block grant funds directly from the federal government.

The MEDC is able to award approximately $40 million in federal CDBG funds each year. There are 1,655 local governments within the state eligible to apply for these funds. Projects are approved contingent upon compliance with state and federal requirements.
