L-3 Communications Advanced Laser Systems Technology (L-3 ALST), a laser and laser range finding systems manufacturer, is expanding its headquarters, research and development and manufacturing operations in Orlando. The company's expansion plans will create an estimated 50 high-value jobs.

L-3 ALST designs, develops and manufactures lasers and laser range-finding systems for various applications, including military surveillance, fire control, navigation, laser altimetry and interplanetary space probes. Its customers include the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, select U.S. Government intelligence agencies, aerospace contractors, commercial telecommunications and wireless customers.

Founded in 1987, the company has grown to 70 employees at its Edgewater Commerce Parkway location in Orlando.

"During the past several years, L-3 ALST has experienced significant growth, necessitating a move to a larger facility," said L-3 ALST President Robert McKinney. "We performed a comprehensive search for the best location for our expansion. Central Florida proved to be the ideal location for the next headquarters of Advanced Laser Systems Technology. The region's laser and photonics industry base is among the strongest in the nation. The presence of such a strong industry cluster provides an ideal setting for our research and development and manufacturing operations. In turn, the availability of a superb laser and photonics-trained workforce gives us an important competitive edge."

The Governor's Office of Tourism, Trade, and Economic Development worked closely with the Orange County Board of County Commissioners, the City of Orlando, the Metro Orlando Economic Development Commission and Enterprise Florida, Inc., to secure this project for the Central Florida region.
