Markes International Ltd., a supplier of toxic gas detection equipment, has expanded into a new headquarters at the Gwaun Elai Medi Science Campus here.
Markes’ equipment detects minute traces of toxic or odorous chemicals in air gas or materials. The company supplies a range of international clients in sectors ranging from the food industry and environmental health agencies to perfume manufacturers.
The threat of terrorism using chemical weapons has also generated demand for Markes’ products from the military and civil defense sectors
The company’s equipment is already widely used to protect important government and civic centers across Europe and the United States, according to the company. Currently, some 85 percent of equipment produced by the company is exported.
Formed in 1997 at the nearby Royal Mint Industrial Estate, Markes has won several awards for innovation and export and has seen rapid growth in its business both at home and overseas. The company’s success has been backed by two regional innovation grants from the Welsh Development Agency and a SMART award from the Welsh Assembly Government.
Markes, who intend to focus part of its research effort on addressing new concerns about emissions of toxins from everyday materials, such as carpets, furnishings and children’s clothing, expects to increase its work force significantly during the next several years.
