The city of Yankton will receive an additional $26,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds for the extension of the city’s waterline.
“This project is important to the community of Yankton in order to support continued growth,” said Gov. Mike Rounds. “We are pleased to partner with the city in providing for the expansion of water service and to assist in the creation of new jobs in the area,” he added.
The funds will be used to extend an existing water line that will support the expansion of the Gehl Co. The original CDBG grant of $81,000 was announced May 19, 2005. Since then, the project cost has increased by approximately $52,000. The city will pay for half of the price increase, and CDBG funds will provide the rest.
The Gehl Co. manufactures fork lifts, asphalt pavers, bobcats, and other construction equipment. The company is increasing production capacity in order to meet growing demand. “This is an excellent example of the steady growth many companies across South Dakota are experiencing,” Gov. Rounds noted. The Gehl Company expects the expansion will create 15 permanent positions.
All CDBG projects are an important part of the state’s 2010 Initiative goal to stabilize rural populations through community development.
