U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data suggests that, by 2010, there will be 167.7 million jobs and only 157.7 million skilled workers to fill them, according to the book.
The authors of the book, Roger Herman, Tom Olivo and Joyce Gioia, say the scarcity of talent that's coming will make the late 1990s look like a practice session. They also contend that some current "pockets of crisis," particularly in the health care and home construction industries, foreshadow the more widespread impending labor crisis to come.
The book offers critical tips and strategies designed to enlighten readers about how to ensure their business survival in the long run.
Among the tips suggested:
* To improve productivity and efficiency, adopt and use technology effectively more and more every day, especially with younger workers who will want to stay on the leading edge.
* Plan strategically for the facilities, technology, management systems and human resources required to respond to the future needs of the marketplace.
* Heat up and enhance your relationship with your employees as your most valued resources, so that as the employment market heats up, good people will choose to stay.
