Ohio is a state that is home to an unusual number of large, metropolitan cities -- Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Akron, Toledo, and Youngstown. The metropolitans, however, are not the only areas attracting industry. Companies have and are continuing to set course for Ohio's countless smaller cities -- micropolitans, if you will.

Amazingly, many of the products produced by manufacturers that have become household names come from small cities and towns scattered throughout the state. Like Dannon and the world's largest yogurt plant, or Whirlpool, Colgate Palmolive, Honda of America, Rubbermaid, and The Scott's Co. -- all of which have selected micropolitan Ohio.
The executives of these companies have found something that others haven't yet discovered: When it comes to speaking about quality of life and a population that instills a hard work ethic, Ohio's many micropolitan communities are the answer.
While it is no surprise that urban cities enjoy greater population densities in an ever-tightening U.S. labor market, the densities are shifting. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more and more people are moving out of the major metropolitan areas.
Micropolitan communities throughout the state are experiencing new residential development. And in today's world where there is labor, there is the potential for industrial investment and success.

Located within a one-day truck drive of 60 percent of the U.S. population, two-thirds of the nation's purchasing power, as well as the major population centers of Canada, it only makes sense for Ohio to offer one of the most superb highway networks in the United States.
To its north, Interstate 80/90 crosses the state east to west. Cutting the state from its northeast quadrant on down to its southwest is Interstate 71, which, incidentally joins with Interstates 76 and 80 outside of Akron and Cleveland.
Slicing the state right in half is the east-west Interstate 70. And Interstate 75 runs south to north from Cincinnati to Toledo, creating one of the strongest automotive
industry pipelines seen in the world today.
Likewise, Interstate 77 traverses the eastern side of the state connecting its Ohio River town of Marietta to Cambridge, Canton, Akron, and eventually Cleveland. In between is a web of well-maintained U.S. highways, state routes, and county roads.
Servicing the state are multiple railroad lines, both mainline carriers as well as short line. Passenger and cargo air services are easily accessible from basically anywhere in the state. And it is a rare community that doesn't provide an airport that can accommodate corporate jets and planes. After all, Ohio is the birthplace of aviation.
The right Training, the right workers
Also impressive are the many colleges and universities, and technical and vocational schools found in almost every county. Equally impressive is the role they play in the ongoing development occurring across the state. Coupled with Ohio's work force development system, the state and its micropolitans have made great strides in ensuring that industries have an educated and skilled labor pool.
Ohio's micropolitans are known for cultivating educated, hard working citizens. Business here is streamlined. Citizens know each other on a first-name basis. Getting building permits or approvals can be accomplished as quickly as an economic development official walking across the street to city hall or the local courthouse.
Family wage earners find their salaries stretch farther since the cost of housing is considerably less than in the bigger cities. With the absence of "rush hour," those same wage earners have more time to unwind, allowing a more focused employee at work. Crime is a moot point, and parents can relax as their children journey to school each morning.
Summertime festivals held in almost every Ohio community offer people a time to come together, have fun and demonstrate community pride. In short, Ohio's micropolitans are a microcosm of what everyone needs in America today: a return to hard work, a quality lifestyle, family fun and values.
