Ulm is a city rich in history, and also a city of today.

It is a blend of historic elements -- such as old buildings and narrow, crooked streets -- and of modern life, exhibiting economic activity, universal hospitality and cultural sophistication. Whether you're traveling from the north, south, east or west, Ulm is easily accessible.

The city gained significance in the Middle Ages as a favorable location for commerce and transportation. Today, it is an important junction of highways and railroad lines. At the heart of Ulm is the city's most famous landmark, the Muenster Cathedral, whose tower can be seen for miles. At more than 531 feet (161 meters), the cathedral tower is the world's highest.

Together with New Ulm, which lies on the right bank of the Danube River, Ulm is the center of a region inhabited by nearly half a million people. The city serves as the economic and cultural center of the wide region between Stuttgart and Augsburg and between Lake Constance and the Swabian Jura mountains. Ulm's academic and scientific community, with its university, vocational/technical institute, renowned research institutes and think tanks, is a regional highlight.

In addition, internationally famous firms such as Iveco-Magirus, Daimler-Benz, Evo-Bus (Kaessbohrer Omnibusse), Koegel, Wieland and Gardena Aushaengeschilder (Signs) represent Ulm's business community.

Innovation Offensive
However, the city of Ulm does more than bask in the renown of these companies and institutions; it has made a commitment to support them actively.

That is why the city, in close collaboration with the university, vocational/technical institute and other partners, has begun an "innovations offensive" designed to define Ulm's fields of competence in new technologies such as biotechnology, microelectronics, etc. In so doing, the city seeks to gain an advantage in the competition among German regions to offer the most favorable location for businesses.

These locations are now available for firms willing to establish themselves in Ulm:

Sites in northern Ulm's BusinessPark, situated next to the Autobahn A8 (Stuttgart-Munich route), at affordable property prices;

Sites in the Science Park, in the midst of Ulm's scientific and academic community and in the immediate vicinity of the Daimler-Benz Research Center ... the prime location for innovative firms;

Rental space for technology-oriented companies in Ulm'sTechnology Center/ "Technologiefabrik" (with the Innovations Center and Biotechnology Park), featuring market-specific consulting, space at a good value and the opportunity to use community facilities and equipment.

Affordable Housing
Ulm also is exploring new ways of providing living space; the city is working with contractors to develop a housing complex with 500 residential units in Wiblingen, an area in the southwest part of the city.
